Recently, some of the team attended AWS ComSum 2024 at Victoria Warehouse Manchester (UK). This is my second time participating in ComSum and I look forward to next year!
AWS ComSum is a community organised event that focuses on AWS. It was well attended with a fantastic mix of participants, ranging from people starting off in the field to folks in well established roles. Most of the talks are from people in the AWS community, so ComSum is a good opportunity to network within it.
Free tickets are available to anyone in the early years of their careers and also available to students. ComSum encourages people of all abilities to attend and get involved which is definitely felt. At no point during the day did I get a sales pitch from anyone, I only received meaningful information.
ComSum this year was split across 3 tracks (Architects, Builders & Leaders) plus 2 Workshops running across the day. This can help you work out which sessions would be best suited to you. You can jump between tracks and workshops across the day as you are not tied to a specific one. With a well curated agenda it was tough to pick a session. Each talk had plenty of seating available so no one was turned away due to overcrowding.
Sheen Brisals from The Lego Group was in attendance signing and giving away his new book Serverless Development on AWS: Building Enterprise-Scale Serverless Solutions. I had the opportunity to meet Sheen and ask questions about the book. Thanks Sheen for the free copy of the book!
Here is a recap of some of the talks I attended:
Zero to production in 8 weeks by Martyn Kilbryde walked us through the process of bringing a new customer online, with what was involved, the tech used, and the size of the team involved with such a task. Another interesting key points were which features are required for a go live and what can wait for after launch. To me this talk highlighted the power of serverless.
The last presentation I attended for the day was James Eastham’s talk on Observability in an Asynchronous World. It was focused on Observability for event driven architectures. I have attended talks by James before at the AWS Summit London and the AWS Liverpool User Group and both times he provided brilliant and engaging presentations. I walked away with so many ideas on how best to implement Observability within event driven architecture. James did a great job of talking about distributed tracing and how you can see the breakdown of time taken across services.
All of the talks from ComSum are uploaded to the ComSum YouTube channel so you can catch up after the event afterwards.
Overall it was a fantastic day of learning and networking within the community. Massive thank you all well done to everyone involved with putting on such a great event. I am sure that our colleagues will be attending again next year.
